David Williams on painting Walking into the natural world, sun on the brow, wind through the hair is what many spend all
week working towards. Add to this a backpack stuffed with paint and brushes and sunscreen and all the other stuff of plein air painting and you start to see the delight which can be a painters journey. When I was young at painting, first starting out, the goal for a painting was
often about forcing a subject to work within the boundaries of a canvas, combined with the abilities in hand. After years of painting on location the much more subtle relationship of coaxing the scene to reveal its true nature has become a daily conversation with the world.
Now, time spent in observation of the world, allows a kind of gentle prayer to be delivered on the wind, watching as sea grasses bend and birds glide silently above treetops. The soul of the world is thus revealed and the first
brushstrokes are laid down on canvas. |

Good for the body is the work of the body, and good for the
soul is the work of the soul, and good for either is the work of the other. ~Henry David Thoreau
